Joy comes in the morning, part 1

That day of Pentecost of which Acts chapter two tells illustrates in an excellent way one basic thread of human life. That particular day had been awaited for a long time, but then, when the day finally came, things happened “suddenly.” In a downright sweet way it is told how they were “all together in one place.” According to one English Bible translation it was specifically all the believers who had gathered together. What a joyful reminder that we are approaching the day when we all gather together before God’s throne, but also a demonstration of what kinds of things we can experience when we have functioning mutual fellowship.

What the disciples experienced on the day of Pentecost was supernatural. And when we experience something supernatural, it is sometimes hard to put into words. Evidence of this is the writer’s choice of words “as of” a rushing mighty wind and “like as of” tongues of fire. How important it is that we do not try to fit God and his doings into some mold that we imagine we control.

When on that day of Pentecost the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, it is stated that his influence filled “all the house.” Later it is told how certain disciples were “full of the Holy Spirit.” May it be so also with us. That is, so that the Holy Spirit fills our whole life with his wonderful presence.
