Coming to faith, part 1

The apostle Paul writes in his letter to the Romans: “because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved: for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

So first of all, “if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord” shows that confession with the mouth is a central part of being saved. A person is expected to confess Jesus as Lord in two ways: both as the supreme ruler of the universe, and also as the sovereign Lord of their own personal life.

The apostle Paul shows that “no man can say, Jesus is Lord, but in the Holy Spirit.” Such a confession is therefore a sure sign of genuine faith that saves from eternal condemnation.
